My Clean Beauty Must Haves

I have been working on creating a skincare routine for a while now. I figured it’s about time I become pretty strict with my skincare rather than the regular “anything goes” that I tend to go with. This required me to read quite extensively on what makes a great skincare regimen and then incorporate that knowledge into creating a perfect fit for my skin type.

So as I create the perfect regimen for me, there are definitely must have products. Moisturizers, toners, cleansers and serums are definitely must haves for my new regimen. In this post I want to write briefly about two of my discovered skincare must-have ingredients and why I am making them must-haves.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA for the purpose of this post).

HA works great for all skin types. It is a carbohydrate naturally found in the body and has numerous purposes including giving the skin moisture, firmness, and suppleness. About half the amount of HA in the body is found in the skin which makes it an ingredient that’s definitely a major component for a clean, clear skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant. A humectant is basically a molecule that pulls in and binds to moisture. Don’t be fooled by the “acid”  in the name; hyaluronic acid is nothing dangerous. It is very beneficial to the skin especially for us oily folks.  HA holds 1000 times its weight than water. That’s huge! Not only is it a major moisture booster, it also helps the skin retain collagen which provides skin’s elasticity. Adding hyaluronic acid to my regimen is vital because as we grow older, the level of HA in our skin decreases. This decrease is even more significant after age 40. So replenishing the skin’s HA content is a must for a healthy younger looking skin.

The key benefits of hyaluronic acid and why I am including it in my skincare regimen include:

* Improve skin’s texture and enhance smoothness.

* Boosts hydration and provides moisture to skin: HA is a humectant, it pulls in moisture from
the surrounding environment. It can also penetrate the skin and bind itself to water thereby
increasing the moisture content in the skin.

* Improve skin tone and appearance: Not only does HA pull in and binds to moisture, it also
enhances the lipid barrier in the skin which prevents the skin from losing moisture. This also
enables the skin fight external pollutants, and improve overall skin tone and complexion. Fighting external pollutants also means there will be an improvement of pigmentation issues.

* Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (due to its ability to stimulate the
production of collagen and elastin in skin cells).

* Aids in clearing out skin: When the moisture in your skin is balanced, you experience fewer
breakouts. This also balances the over production of facial oils. (No more clogged pores,
woohoo!).

For my regimen, I will be using the OZ Naturals Hyaluronic Acid serum. This is the main one with clean ingredients that I have found with an affordable price tag. Will this work for me? We’ll find out soon!

SERUM:

A Serum is basically a product with high concentration of a particular ingredient. Serums contain smaller molecules which enable them better penetrate the deeper layers of the skin to deliver the targeted ingredients. This is why they are best at targeting specific skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, etc.

Serums are not necessarily moisturizers although they often contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid mentioned above. However, there are some serums in the market with ingredients that increase their moisturizing properties thus making them good moisturizer alternative. The first serum I’ve tried is the Tata Harper’s Rejuvenating Serum which I reviewed HERE. It’s hard to compare serums to regular moisturizers as they have different purposes. Serums do a more specific job faster and perhaps more effectively than a regular moisturizer would. For the most part, a lot of ingredients are excluded from serums leaving them with mainly active ingredients for a targeted purpose.  How you apply the serum depends on whether the serum is a water-based serum or an oil based serum. Do let me know if you want me to write about these two kinds of serum.

Serums tend to be expensive due to the high concentration of ingredients they contain. I found some affordable serum with super clean, toxic free ingredients of course. I have read a lot about this serum and I am excited to give them a try. As always, I like to try these products first before I review and say whether or not I would repurchase or recommend. So stay tuned for a follow-up review post on these products in about a week or two.

Various serums work for various skin types. My skin type is acne prone/very oily, sometimes combination and now I’m battling enlarged pores… ugh!. For this skin type, I am looking for a Vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid and any other serum with ingredients that’ll unclog my pores, reduce/regulate my oil production, hydrate my skin without making it oily.

Here are the two serums I have purchased and will be using for now. (Will review when I have used and figured if I’d recommend or repurchase)

Vitamin C Is a very important ingredient used for fighting free radicals. I was shocked when I learned that humans actually do not make vitamin C and so we must get them through our diet and apply them topically for those benefits. Vitamin C does a whole lot for the skin including keeping it radiant and healthy looking. So it was a no-brainer to start out my serum exploration with vitamin C.

The exfoliating serum from MadHippie has glycolic acid as one of its active ingredients.  Glycolic acid is great for oily skin. It helps in controlling excessive oil and helps unclog pores/prevent them from clogging.
